Edvard Munch was a famous Norwegian painter who lived from 1863 to 1944. He is know as one of the the most famous painters in the world. He was a Norwegian Symbolist painter, printmaker, and an important forerunner of expressionistic art. Edvard Munch's work as painter was more than 60 years

His family life

Edvard Munch was born in hedemark on desember 12,in 1863. He grew up in Norway's capital Oslo, which then was calld Christiania. He was the second of five children.His father Christian Munch, was a military doctor.. Edvard Munch had three sisters calld Sophie Laura and Inger,and one brother calld Andreas.

In 1864 after Edvard's birth,the family moved to Kristiania. In 1868 when Edvard Munch just was four year old, his mother Laura Cathrine died of tuberculosis. After she died her sister Karen Bjolstad, took care for the children.

The family Munch has moved many times. In 1875 the family moved again, and this time they moved to a new and better place called Grunnerløkka. In 1878 ten years later after his mother died. Died his brother and a sister of the same thing tuberculosis.

His life and work

Edvard munch began painting as a 12 year old boy. Edvard Munch was the art who really didn't know what to become.So when he was 16 years old he would become an architect and he went for school for this,but a little while later he found out that he would become an artist.

In 1880 when he was 17 years old, he began at the royal drawing school.He began on the line for freehand drawing. In 1881 he began to follow the teaching evenly.So already after one year he gived up the drawing school.

In 1882 to 1883 he went to the paint school to Christian Krohg. Krohg was the most important painter for him in the first few years. In this period munch painted in a naturalistic style.

The first drawings of Munch was furniture in the house, and some of the drawings was also from the history.

In 1885 when munch was 22 years old. He traveled for first time. The first time he traveled to was a place called atwerpen in Belgia. There he participated with a work in the norwegian department in the the world exhibition, and in the spring of 1889 Munch hold his own exhibition in Kristiania. After this started Edvard Munchs career as a painter.

Around 1889, Edvard Munch traveled another place to called Paris. There he studied drawing model. In 1886 was Edvard Munch's first great years as an artist.It was when he painted det syke barne og Dagen derpå.

Edvard Munch tried art in many different directions. He tried within the natural realism, Impressionism and pointillismen. Out of this he found his own style of painting.

In 1880 Edvard Munch painted the same reality as possible. But later he went over to paint what he saw with his inner eyes. And With strong emotions.

In 1903 he married with Arne Kavli. In 1916 Munch bought a property Ekley near Oslo, and there

lived he the rest of his life.

The best known of all Edvard Munch 's works is the skrik, painted in 1893 and is now hanging in the nationalgallery in Oslo. This and the syke barnet painted in 1881-1886 is also hanging in the nationalgallery in Oslo.
